Man believed drowned in Newman

POSTED January 22, 2010 11:44 p.m.
Police suspect a man drowned in the swollen Orestimba Creek in Newman Tuesday night after going around the signs warning of the flood.
The man’s body has not been recovered.
The creek had flooded its banks Tuesday and spilled across Eastin Road. Barricades and warning signs had been set up to prevent traffic crossing the road, but according to the Newman Police Services, the man drove his Ford Explorer around all the barriers.
Two police officers checking on the creek’s water level around 10:30 p.m. heard the man screaming for help. They tried tossing him a rope, but the man seemed too tired out and wasn’t able to swim against the fast current.
The last the officers saw of the man, he was slipping underneath the water.
Authorities have been searching for the man. The Ford Explorer was found Wednesday when the creek’s water level went down.
