Every year, the El Capitan District for Boy Scouts of America hosts an annual recognition dessert night to honor the best of the best.

One of the best awarded at Tuesday’s celebration is Tynan Howze from Turlock who was honored with the Cub Scout of the Year award.

“I feel pretty good about getting (the award),” Howze said. “I am excited to tell my mom and dad.”

Howze is an active scooter scout in Turlock and is very involved in his community. He participates in Turlock Youth Football and volunteered at Turlock Together in the past year.

He is known to ask for money for his birthday, but not for himself. Instead of gifts, he has been known to ask for donations to give to a variety of organizations around the community.

Out of the 17 cities within the El Capitan District, Howze was nominated by one of his fellow cub scouts to be awarded with the Cub Scout of the Year award.

The El Capitan District spreads to Ballico, Ceres, Crows Landing, Denair, Grayson, Gustine, Hickman, Hilmar, Hughson, Keyes, LaGrange, Newman, Patterson, Stevinson, Turlock, Waterford, and Wesley.

Along with their annual dessert awards night, El Capitan District will be celebrating along with the rest of the districts in the country, the 100-year anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.

Tuesday’s celebration kicked off with a proclamation of recognition signed by Turlock Mayor John Lazar for the El Capitan District and the Boy Scouts of America 100-year celebration starting back in Feb. 8, 1910.

Turlock Unified School District trustee Bob Weaver was even present representing his participation in Pack 21.

Boy Scouts of America has a year-long celebration in store for Boy Scouts all over the country from anniversary patches to planting a tree for the celebration.

Turlock has also jumped in with the 100-year celebration with a display for the Boy Scouts of America at the Turlock Historical Society museum located on South Center Street.

This year is a special year where Boy Scouts of America will be honoring those scouting heroes in the 100th Anniversary National Hall of Leadership to recognize the everyday heroes who have made a difference in people’s lives. This is just one of the special programs they will be hosting to keep the celebration going year-round.

A traveling museum for the Boy Scouts of America will also be touring around the country to spread the word of 100-years of excellence with a fully interactive campus with games and demonstrations.

Ending the year-long celebration, Boy Scouts of America is working with the Major and Minor League Baseball teams to sponsor a “Pitch for Scouting” day to recognize those that are or have participated in the organization to join in the 100-year celebration.
