Community demand prompts MJC to expand Medical Assisting Program

POSTED August 27, 2015 8:53 p.m.

Students interested in the Modesto Junior College Medical Assisting Program will not only be able to enroll in the fall, but spring as well, following the college’s decision to expand the program to help meet the community’s growing demand for highly-skilled, credentialed medical assistants.

Deemed as one of the nation’s fastest growing career by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical assisting has undergone significant job growth that can be attributed to a number of factors, including the growing number of elderly Americans who need medical treatment and a surge in the number of physicians’ offices and outpatient care facilities.

Additional Medical Assisting Program courses are attributed to the college’s recent addition of faculty and an instructional support assistant. More students will also be given access to the program through flexible online course offerings.

Through this program, students can either earn a certificate of completion, an Associate of Science degree in Medical Assisting, or both. The two-semester certificate program offers training in administrative and clinical office procedures.

The program also prepares students to take the national certification exam offered by the American Association of Medical Assistants to become a Certified Medical Assistant.

The estimated certification program cost of $2,500 includes a $46 per unit enrollment fee, a materials fee, various student fees, as well as a uniform, books, certification exam, and clinical clearance process.

Program applicants must have a high school diploma, a GED or a college degree and have completed the admission process to be a student at MJC.
