Turlock Wrestling Club seeks community's help in earning grant

The Turlock Wrestling Club is asking the community to help them earn a $2,500 grant from the Liberty Mutual Insurance by making a Play Positive Pledge at https://www.playpositive.com/pledge/takePle...

POSTED September 29, 2015 3:59 p.m.

The Turlock Wrestling Club is asking the community to pledge to have good sportsmanship in order to win a much-needed grant.

The club is hoping to be awarded one of 10 $2,500 grants from the Liberty Mutual Insurance Play Positive Pledge. Each Pledge that is completed earns one point for the team.

The Play Positive Pledge is part of the Liberty Mutual Insurance Play Positive program, which is an ongoing effort to celebrate good sportsmanship in youth sports.

“This program targets many of the issues we see happening at youth sporting events by shining a positive light on what it means to be a positive coach and a positive sport parent,” said Tim Williams, vice president of marketing at Liberty Mutual Insurance.

Beyond that, Liberty Mutual is supporting local organizations like Turlock Wrestling Club to offset the costs of providing a valuable youth sports experience.

Only one pledge per person is allowed, and pledgers must be 18 years of age or older. The five organizations which tally the most points by Oct. 15 in each division will earn one of the 10 $2,500 grants.

The Turlock Wrestling Club is hoping to receive a grant that would come just in time for its 2015-2016 season, which begins in November. The grant would be used to create a scholarship fund for deserving athletes.

The wrestling club has over 50 athletes, ages 5 to 13, who wrestle up to four months a year, and over 20 who wrestle at least 10 months out of the year. These competitive wrestlers practice four to five days a week with tournaments almost every weekend and wrestling camps in the summer months.

“This grant money would come at a perfect time to help offset some costs for registration, gear and traveling expenses,” said Lucas Solarez, head coach for the Turlock Wrestling Club. “We are asking for the people of this community to make a pledge for good sportsmanship, and help us win this grant. It's completely free and only takes a few minutes.”

Currently, the Turlock Wrestling Club sits in fourth place in the grant competition.
