Pedestrian dies from collision with vehicle

POSTED January 21, 2016 6:47 p.m.

A Turlock family is mourning the loss of their patriarch after he died from injuries he sustained from being hit by a vehicle while out for a walk.

David Amesquita, 65, of Turlock died Sunday after being hospitalized on Saturday for injuries he sustained after being hit by a car while crossing the street near his home.

Amesquita had been out for his routine walk around 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the 3600 block of N. Olive Avenue neighborhood when he was struck by a Nissan Sentra. The driver of the Sentra, an 86-year-old man remained at the scene and cooperated with police officers said Turlock Police spokesperson Sgt. Stephen Webb.

The driver, whose name was not released, was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the collision, Webb said.

The Sentra was traveling at about 30 mph northbound on Olive Avenue, just south of Fullerton Drive when the collision occurred.

Webb said Amesquita was crossing the street at the time. There is no crosswalk at that location.

“The driver tried to swerve and avoid hitting him, but was unable to do so,” Webb said.

“He was coming home to have dinner with his family, now it’s an empty home without him,” said Amesquita’s sister, Alice Williams.

Williams said the impact caused Amesquita to have two broken legs, a broken back, and a severe head trauma. He was taken to a nearby hospital and died the following day.

“It’s hard to lose someone like we have,” Williams said. “I am his twin and it’s true what they say about twins. I feel a hole inside me without him here.”

Webb said Amesquita was wearing dark clothing and that it was dark when the collision occurred. Williams said her brother did carry a light with him when he went out for walks.

No citations or arrests were made from the incident, though the investigation remains open.
