‘Hairspray’ opening at Playhouse Merced

“Hairspray,” featuring Jim Kocher as Edna Turnblad and Katy Uyeno as Tracy Turnblad, opens tonight at Playhouse Merced.

POSTED February 4, 2016 7:56 p.m.

“Hairspray,” the musical that celebrates classic pop tunes, energizing dance moves, and the highest hairdos possible is coming to the stage of Playhouse Merced.

The show opens Friday for a three weekend run concluding on Feb. 21.

Quirky, plus-sized teenager Tracy Turnblad has one dream: to dance on the "Corny Collins Show." When she gets put in detention with the African-American students in the school, they teach her some of their dance moves, and her new found groove wins her a spot on the show. Overnight, Tracy transforms from a nobody into a star and uses her newfound influence to advocate for racial integration on the television show. The bright, energetic story of Tracy Turnblad encourages everyone to look past the color of one's skin and fight for every human being's equal rights.

“Hairspray” is directed by Colton Dennis with musical direction by Dennis Brown, and choreography by Sara Sweatt.

The show stars Katy Uyeno as Tracy Turnblad, Jim Kocher as Edna, Ryan Dziadosz as Corny Collins, and Rachel Pearre as Penny Pingleton.

The show is rated for teens and older.

Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays.

Tickets range from $15 to $22 for adults and $10 for students with id. Tickets can be purchased by going online to www.playhousemerced.com, by calling 725-8587, or visiting the box office at 452 West Main Street in downtown Merced, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
