Public Safety Facility moves forward

The Turlock City Council agreed on Tuesday to buy the final property needed to construct the previously approved 57,570 sq. ft. Public Safety Facility.
The agreement calls for the city to pay $87,000 to purchase the leasehold interest for the property located at 210 North Broadway and pay relocation benefits to the current tenants. The purchase finalizes city control of all properties within the Public Safety Facility footprint, clearing the way for construction to begin.
Upon completion, the $35 million Redevelopment Agency-funded project will total 4.6 acres adjacent to the soon to be renovated Carnegie Arts Center. The facility will host the Turlock Police and Fire Departments, as well as dispatching services. The development is also expected to aid downtown parking, as plans call for 167 secure parking spaces for City vehicles and 83 public parking spaces.

Longer downtown parking hours
Parking restrictions on the strip of South Broadway between Market and A streets will be brought into line with the rest of Turlock’s downtown core, following council action Tuesday evening.
The change will increase the parking restriction from an one hour maximum to two hours maximum, during enforcement hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., except weekends and holidays. The longer hours are intended to better allow customers of a nearby restaurant and bakery to shop and dine without worrying about parking tickets.

The council also unanimously approved:
• At the direction of city staff, a change to the Turlock Municipal Code that bans the approval of business licenses for uses that violate state or federal law. The move was said to be a “required clarification” to ensure the city is in compliance with state and federal law.
• The final reading for a planned development for the expansion of All Saints Newman Catholic Community Church, which will include a new 7,600 sq. ft. multipurpose building, a new 700 sq. ft. office building, a 1,000 sq. ft. youth center expansion, and, eventually a new 17,000 sq. ft., 1,000 seat church building.
• The final reading for a housekeeping revision to the City of Turlock’s agreement with the Turlock Poker Room, editing in a passage restricting the maximum payment to 7.5 percent of gross revenue, which was previously agreed upon but not included in the final text.
