A multiple agency narcotics investigation turned into an officer involved shooting Tuesday night in Turlock when a volley of shots took down one person and wounded another.

No officers were injured in the shooting, said Turlock Police spokesperson Officer Steve Rodrigues.

The shooting happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot at 2323 W. Main Street. The parking lot is home to Turlock Regal, the Turlock Poker Room, Starbucks and other eateries and retail stores.

The narcotics agency was leading the narcotics investigation. It is an agency that uses law enforcement from multiple departments. It’s unknown at this time what law enforcement agencies were involved in the shooting. The Turlock Police Department, the Modesto Police Department, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department and the California Highway Patrol were all at the scene of the shooting.

At some point in the investigation shots were fired and one person was killed at the scene. A second person was wounded and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The condition of the second person is unknown at this time.

The gender and ages of the two people shot were not released.

In the immediate area of the investigation were several pickup trucks. One truck was stopped in the middle of the parking lane with doors open on the driver side and passenger side. Behind the truck was the body of the deceased under a yellow tarp.

One person at the scene said they heard six shots, while another said he heard far more and put the number at about 20.

Police were interviewing several patrons and employees at Starbucks who witnessed the shooting.

The businesses in the area remained opened, though the access from W. Main had been closed off. People were allowed to leave the area, except for those individuals with vehicles parked in the immediate vicinity of the shooting. The vehicles parked in that area could not be removed until law enforcement finished their investigation of the area and collected any evidence.

The investigation is ongoing and more details should be released as it progresses.
