Intruders beat man, force school lockdown

POSTED March 9, 2010 11:46 p.m.
A brazen home invasion robbery Tuesday afternoon caused a temporary lockdown at Crowell Elementary School and left one man hospitalized from a brutal beating.
One suspect, Victor Lindo, 29, of Turlock, was caught after an extended foot pursuit. Two other men were also apprehended, but were subsequently released, Turlock Police Lt. Steven Williams said.
Crowell was put on lockdown for less than 0 minutes Tuesday afternoon after it was reported that one of the fleeing suspects was armed and was running in the direction of the school, Williams said.
The incident began shortly after 1 p.m., when the police received a call from a man saying his friend was being attacked by a man who had broken into the house through the back door. The dispatcher could hear sounds of a man screaming in the background, Williams said.
When the first officer arrived at the house in the 500 block of North Avenue, he saw several people run from the house and called for additional officers, Williams said.
A foot pursuit ensued with the suspects jumping over fences and running through backyards in an attempt to allude capture. While chasing Lindo, an officer saw him toss a handgun, which was later recovered, Williams said.
Lindo was captured during the foot pursuit and was booked into Stanislaus County Jail on felony charges of hit and run and battery, as well as misdemeanor charges of possession of a concealed weapon and possession of a loaded weapon. He also had a felony warrant for his arrest.
The victim, a 25-year-old man, was taken to a hospital with several facial injuries. It was unknown if he was struck with the gun or just fists.
Williams said the victim was not a random target and that he and Lindo knew each other, though he could not elaborate at this time as to what prompted the attack.
