Turlock collision proves fatal for woman riding scooter

POSTED September 2, 2016 9:17 p.m.

The woman who was struck by a car while on her nobility scooter has died from his injuries, according to the Turlock Police Department.

The woman was identified as Jo Ann Simas, 65, by the police department. It was previously stated that the person who was struck was 60 years old but this was incorrect.

The collision happened at 2:49 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of E. Olive Avenue and N. Palm Street.

Simas was riding a mobility scooter southbound on E. Olive Avenue when she was struck by a sedan that had turned westbound from N. Palm Street onto E. Olive Avenue.

Simas was pinned underneath the vehicle for about three to five minutes before she was extricated by the Turlock Fire Department. Firefighters initiated CPR on Simas and she was rushed to a nearby hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

The 80-year-old woman who was driving the vehicle did not sustain any injuries. The woman’s name has not been released at this time.

The Turlock Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is conducting the probe into the collision. At this time it does not appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to call Sgt. Scott Ellis at 668-5550 ext. 6681.
