Scammers prowling Merced County

POSTED March 12, 2010 10:22 p.m.
A group of scammers are hitting up businesses and residents in Atwater trying to get money for high school sports programs, the Merced County Sheriff’s Department reported.
The suspects are asking people for donations for sporting events for Atwater and Buhach Colony high schools and will give out a sports schedule for the donation.
“The money does not go to the high schools and the sports schedule they hand out is one they print offline,” said sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Tom MacKenzie. “If you are approached by someone asking to donate money for a school event, contact the chamber of commerce or the high schools they claim to be representing. If you are contacted by these individuals, do not make any donations and contact law enforcement.”
