History of business:

Since 1978, Cycle Masters has provided Turlock bicycle enthusiasts with top quality products, whether it be from their original location on Golden State Boulevard, their former home next to the Post Office or their new, spacious location in Downtown Turlock.

“Our new location is a lot nicer,” said the store’s service manager, Katie Colesberry. “I love being in the downtown area. Before, we were technically downtown but no one knew where we were. Now, we’re getting more business and a lot of walk-ins.”

The bike shop’s new site, next to Colossal Tattoo, has allowed Cycle Masters’ wide variety of mountain, street and beach cruiser bikes to be more visible to the community. The mountain and beach cruiser bikes are the shop’s most popular, said Colesberry, with Turlock residents often taking mountain bikes on a ride along the canal, or coasting down the street on their beach cruisers.

Though bicycles at Cycle Masters tend to be a bit pricier than those found at larger retail stores, they are of a much higher quality and in turn last longer.

“Our bikes are higher quality and professionally built; we test them and make sure everything is good to go,” said Colesberry, whose most recent bicycle lasted her 10 years. “Bikes at stores like Wal-Mart and Target are disposable, and are usually put together by the same guy who’s stacking the store’s toilet paper.”

In addition to selling bicycles, Cycle Masters also offers children’s’ bicycles and bike accessories including bells, interchangeable grips, lights and locks. The bike shop also provides a 90-day free service period for any bicycle purchased at the shop, and can perform repairs on other bikes as well.

In addition to being a heart-healthy hobby, there is also a community that comes along with biking. Cycle Masters hosts a shop ride every Thursday, which includes riding at Exchequer Mountain Bike Park in La Grange and a barbecue afterward during the summer months.

“There’s a big social aspect to it,” said Colesberry. “There are always group rides going on, with at least 20 people and sometimes even up to 50. They’re awesome rides, super social and competitive even.”

Cyclers interested in group rides around Turlock can call the Cycle Masters shop for times, dates and locations, said Colesberry.

Colesberry emphasized the importance of shopping for bikes locally.

“It’s nice to have people in the community that shop with us,” she said. “Shopping locally keeps the money here in Turlock.”
