Pitman wrestling beats Atwater with ease

Pride now 3-0 in CCC duals

Pitman wrestling beats Atwater with ease

Kendall La Rosa earns near-fall points against his Atwater opponent moments before a pin during Wednesday’s Central California Conference dual between the Pride and Falcons.

Pitman High hosted Atwater High Wednesday night for a six-match dual that saw the Pride beat the Falcons in convincing fashion, 74-6, for their third Central California Conference dual win of the season.

“Our kids showed up today and they wrestled tough,” head coach Adam Vasconcellos said.

Facing an Atwater squad that was low in numbers, Pitman benefited from six forfeits. Atwater received one forfeit at 170 pounds which resulted in its only team points of the night.

Members of the Pride who did wrestle dominated on the mat as only one of the six matches went the distance and was decided via decision. The rest of Pitman’s matches were won with one technical decision and four pins.

“We’re kind of at the point of the season where we’re getting ready for this weekend. This weekend is Doc Buchannan the toughest tournament of the year, so kids are coming down on weight and we’re getting ready for the final stretch,” Vasconcellos said.

Pitman will compete in the Doc Buchanan tournament Friday and Saturday before returning to CCC competition on the road Wednesday night against Buhach Colony High. Currently unbeaten in the CCC with wins over Merced High and El Capitan High in addition to Atwater, the dual against the Thunder is sure to be competitive and will likely be determined by the performance of Pitman’s heavier weight classes.

“Next week against Buhach is going to be a good one. They beat us last year 33-30,” Vasconcellos said. “They have a good squad. They’re solid all the way through,”

If Pitman can beat Buhach on Wednesday, only Golden Valley High and rival Turlock High stand between them and an undefeated league season.
