Virginia Doyle (Norwood) Barnett

July 4, 1913 — March 11, 2010

POSTED March 19, 2010 11:28 p.m.
Virginia Doyle (Norwood) Barnett, 96, died peacefully on March 11 in Turlock. She was born in Seattle, Wash. on July 4, 1913 to William R. and Elizabeth (Herren) Norwood. She attended Lincoln High School in Seattle and graduated from the University of Washington in 1934 with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts.  Virginia married Arthur Gordon Barnett in 1936, and together they raised four children — Gordon, John, Molly and Frederick.
Arthur and Virginia conducted their lives and raised their family with a view toward societal awareness and, simply, trying to do the right thing.
Virginia served in various capacities with the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). She was most interested in efforts to bring peaceful resolution to human conflict, wherever it might be. She and Arthur joined many, many others in trying to address the injustice of the internment during World War II of American citizens of Japanese decent.
Virginia was also a life-long member of the Women’s University Club. In 1961, Virginia and Arthur moved their family to Bainbridge Island. They called Fletcher’s Bay their home, loved the water and watching the storms come up through Rich’s Passage. Bainbridge Island always remained a very special place in Virginia’s heart, not only for the special feeling of “island life” but mainly for the many friends she and Arthur had there.
Always interested in art, Virginia and Arthur were founding members of the Museum of Northwest Art (MONA), in LaConnor, Wash.
Virginia is survived by Gordon, John and Frederick; and was preceded in death by Arthur and daughter, Molly. Virginia also enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren, the newest being born November 2009.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Bainbridge Helpline House, the Bainbridge Island Historical Society, the American Civil Liberties Union or the American Friends Service Committee.
A simple memorial service will be held June 26 at the Eagle Harbor Congregational Church, Winslow, Bainbridge Island, Wash.
