Turlock High to host youth basketball camp

POSTED April 21, 2017 8:24 p.m.

Turlock High varsity boys basketball head coach Doug Cornfoot is a firm believer that the foundation for a successful high school program is at the youth level.

Cornfoot aims to build future successful high school basketball players through the fifth annual Youth Basketball Camp for boys and girls.

“There are tons of baseball and youth soccer and Pop Warner football (programs), so we need to get these kids excited about basketball knowing they can do that also,” said Cornfoot. “It's limited here in Turlock, so we are just trying to get kids playing as much basketball as possible so we have to give them all possibilities so they know there is another option at the youth level.”

Cornfoot — and Pitman High varsity head coach Harvey Marable — are continually seeking to train the youth and provide them with the tools they need to succeed.

Cornfoot has seen some of the fruit of his labor since taking over the program in 2006.

He and his Bulldogs went 10 consecutive seasons from 2006-2016, without posting a losing record in league while making the postseason for all of those years.

The coaching instruction for the youth camp will be headed by Cornfoot, who will be joined by RJ Henderson and Stanislaus State assistant coach Ben Riley. Local former and current college players will assist in the camp as well, according to Cornfoot.

The camp will run from May 30 to June 1 at the Bulldogs gym. Camp for ages 7-10 will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and the 11-14 age group will go from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

This camp will feature skill development, fundamental instruction, games and daily contests. The cost is $70 and includes a camp T-shirt.

For more information contact RJ Henderson 209-664-0646 or Doug Cornfoot at 209-535-6076.
