Storage fire poses threat to Turlock apartment complex

Storage fire poses threat to Turlock apartment complex

A fire in an outdoor storage unit was reported shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday at an apartment complex in the 1000 block of Geer Road.

POSTED June 12, 2017 11:45 a.m.

The Turlock Fire Department responded to a large blaze at an outside storage unit that was rapidly threatening to spread to the adjoining apartment.

There were no injuries reported from the fire and the firefighters were able to keep the flames from causing significant damage to the residences, said Turlock Fire Chief Robert Talloni.

“The fire was auto-exposing up the back of the building into the second floor windows," Talloni said. "Fire crews made an aggressive fire attack and held the fire to the exterior.”

The fire was first reported shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday at an apartment complex in the 1000 block of Geer Road.

Turlock Fire crews arrived on scene to find a large storage area on fire on the first floor of a two-story apartment complex. The fire was advancing up the outside wall to the rear of the apartments, breaking out windows on the second floor and threatening multiple units in the complex, said Turlock Fire Department spokesman Kevin Tidwell.

Turlock firefighters brought the blaze under control by advancing two attack hose lines and making rapid extinguishment of the fire, which prevented it from spreading into multiple apartment units. Crews simultaneously searched inside the threatened apartments to ensure all occupants were out and accounted for. All tenants made it out safely.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Turlock Fire Department responded with the Fire Chief, one Battalion Chief, one Squad Company and three Engine Companies for a total of 14 personnel. Ceres Fire assisted on scene with one Battalion Chief and one Engine Company for an additional four personnel. Turlock Rural Fire District provided City coverage during the incident.

Other assisting agencies included Turlock Police Department, Stanislaus County Fire Investigation Unit, American Medical Response, Turlock Irrigation District and PG&E. Red Cross provided assistance for several displaced occupants.
