Vanessa Guthrie has always been passionate about fitness, competing in athletics in high school, running nearly 100 half marathons and even overcoming an eating disorder through hard work and dedication in the gym. Along with her husband Zachary Osborne, the 24-year-old is hoping to spread enthusiasm for fitness throughout Turlock at GOH Fitness, a new gym that offers boot camp style classes in a friendly atmosphere.

“I love everything health and fitness,” said Guthrie. “Working out and feeling strong has helped me feel confident, and it’s what makes me happy every day.”

At GOH Fitness, 30-minute classes are offered seven times a day, with the earliest beginning at 5:15 a.m. and the latest at 6:45 p.m. Workouts typically feature compound movements with equipment like barbells and ropes, with cardio and abdominal work mixed in, and alternate between short periods of intense exercise with less intense recovery periods, known as High Intensity Interval Training. This form of training burns fat more efficiently than a steady workout, said Guthrie.

“The thing about High Intensity Interval Training is that you don’t have to do it for very long, but you still get the benefits of a long workout because your cardiovascular system is going through the roof,” she said. “And, you continue to burn fat after your workout as well.”

In addition to the gym’s boot camp-style classes, GOH Fitness also provides yoga sessions and Spartan Race training. Soon, Guthrie plans to host Zumba classes at the gym as well, as she is a certified instructor.

Because classes at GOH Fitness take place in a group setting, the atmosphere at the gym is one Guthrie describes as a “family environment.” Each client receives a one-on-one approach from Guthrie, Osborne and the gym’s other trainers, she said, making fitness fun and worthwhile.

“I never let anyone feel excluded from my gym. That, to me, is so important,” said Guthrie. “I don’t want my gym to be a place where you just come to work out. I want it to be a haven and a safe place away from home.”

GOH Fitness offers three types of membership plans. For three classes a week, the cost is $59 per month, or clients can attend four classes a week for $69 per month. For $89 per month, clients can attend unlimited classes, and anyone with a membership is able to attend Zumba, Spartan and yoga classes.

“Every single day the classes are completely different. You have no idea what you’re walking into,” said Guthrie. “I like fitness to be fun, and don’t want people to shy away from trying something new.”
