POSTED July 4, 2017 9:41 a.m.

A head-on collision between two vehicles and a third crash involving another, injured five people, four of whom were hospitalized, and has a Hilmar man looking at criminal charges.

The collision happened shortly before 10:30 p.m. Sunday on Highway 140 in Stevinson, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Juan Denis Meza Pizarro, 38, of Hilmar was driving a 2008 Honda Civic eastbound on Highway 140, with an 11-year-old boy of Atwater in the front passenger seat.

Meza Pizarro allowed the vehicle to drift into the westbound lane, where it struck a 2016 Toyota Prius driven by Deanna Martin, 46, of Los Banos. The two cars collided head-on and sent the Civic into the path of a Chevy Silverado that had attempted to swerve out of the way of the two colliding vehicles, according to the CHP.

Martin sustained minor injuries from the collision, while her passenger, a 16-year-old boy, suffered serious injuries, including internal bleeding and a broken arm. Both were taken by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.

The driver of the Silverado, Elizabeth Amaral, 32, had a complaint of pain, but refused medical treatment at the scene.

The 11-year-old boy in the Civic had a broken leg and was taken by air ambulance to Valley Children's Hospital in Madera.

Meza Pizarro sustained major injuries from the crash and was rushed to Doctors Medical Center for treatment. According to the CHP, Meza Pizarro showed signs of being intoxicated. He is expected to be arrested for felony driving under the influence and child endangerment once released.
