Firefighters respond to blaze at Turlock storage facility

Firefighters battle a blaze at a storage facility on McCormick Street on Sunday.

POSTED July 4, 2017 9:53 a.m.

Firefighters from the Turlock Fire Department had to make an aggressive attack on a blaze burning in a storage unit before it could spread through the facility and to neighboring businesses.

The fire occurred at DMG Self Storage at 1768 McCormick St. around 11 a.m. Sunday. The storage facility is next to an auto detailing business.

The first firefighters to arrive found heavy smoke billowing from the eaves of the commercial structure, but it was unclear which unit was on fire, so the locks had to be cut off multiple units before the fire was found.

The unit where the fire began was used to primarily store furniture. It was contained quickly once discovered.

“Firefighters’ concerns were possible hazardous materials which may have been stored, electricity to the refrigeration units and the extension of fire and smoke to other areas in the building,” said Turlock Fire Chief Robert Talloni.

It's unknown what caused the fire or the damage it caused the other units.

Turlock Fire responded to the incident with four engines, a battalion chief, the Fire Chief, a division chief and the Fire Marshal for investigation. Ceres Fire responded with one engine and a battalion chief and Turlock Rural Fire Department provided coverage throughout the city.

Any inquiries or information regarding this investigation can be addressed by contacting the Fire Marshal at 209 669-2119.
