Collision on Highway 165 claims Turlock man’s life

POSTED August 8, 2017 7:53 p.m.

A 27-year-old Turlock man was killed in a suspected drunk driving collision on Highway 165 on Saturday night.

The deceased was identified by the Merced County Coroner’s Office as Armando Corrales, 27, of Turlock.

The California Highway Patrol suspects Corrales may have been under the influence of alcohol when his vehicle collided with another vehicle while traveling along Highway 165.

The collision was reported around 10:15 p.m. Saturday on Highway 165, between Fowler and W. Bradbury roads.

Corrales was driving a 2004 Toyota Corolla northbound on the highway when for an unknown reason he allowed the vehicle to drift off the road and onto the east shoulder, according to the CHP.

Corrales overcorrected the car, causing it to spin into the southbound lanes, where it struck a 1988 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Franklin Horton, 58, of Hilmar.

The CHP said Horton attempted to veer out of the path of the Toyota, but was unable to avoid the collision. The right front of the Silverado struck the front end of the Corolla, causing major damage to the Toyota.

Corrales sustained significant blunt force trauma from the crash and died at the scene, the CHP reported.

Horton had a complaint of pain, but refused medical treatment at the scene.

The investigation into the collision remains ongoing.
