Bulldog boys and girls water polo top Atwater

POSTED September 19, 2017 8:45 p.m.

It was a good Monday from the Turlock High pool after the boys’ and girls’ varsity water polo teams hosted the Atwater Falcons.

The girls beat the Falcons in a 15-8 decision while the boys shocked last year's Central California Conference champs in a 14-11 final.

“It was a well-played win,” said Turlock girls’ head coach Anne Cornell.

For the girls, Turlock's Nicole Groteguth had five goals while Allie Serratos added four. Lauren Stewart had two and Caitlin Cornell added a pair. Groteguth added seven steals while Cornell and Serratos each had five apiece.

The girls are now 1-1 in the CCC.

The boys came into their second league game with high hopes and kept things rolling after taking a 4-2 lead after the first.

Turlock took a 6-2 lead into the half and led 11-5 by the start of the fourth.

“It was tight and intense and Matt Hesse had the game of his life,” said Turlock boys’ head coach Sonja Raynes. “He had five goals, three in the fourth, but he was everywhere. I want to say he was in 90 percent of every offensive play — just everywhere.”

Turlock also had help from Cole Marchy who added four goals.

“Couple times they would thread the needle, it was very beautiful,” Raynes said.

“Trent Coffey had one goal and one assist and a steal and Noah Benson had two goals one assist and one steal,” said Raynes. “Dylan Bernardi had one goal, two steals. He and Hesse were matching up a lot.”

Turlock got outscored in the fourth 6-3, but held on for the win.

“We were able to hold them off and control the ball and big thing is they held the tempers cause the other guys were in an uncomfortable situation for Atwater,” said Raynes. “Also, Ethan Heppner three assist and three steals.”

Turlock boys’ goalkeeper Brandon Dhanowa finished with 10 saves, four steals and one assist as well.

The Bulldogs are off to a 2-0 start in the CCC.
