The Turlock Gospel Mission is hosting an exclusive, pre-release red carpet event for the movie “Same Kind of Different as Me” to raise support and funds for their mission.

The charity event will be at Turlock Regal Cinemas on Oct. 18.

“Same Kind of Different as Me” is the true story of international art dealer Ron Hall (Greg Kinnear), who befriends a homeless man (Djimon Hounsou) in hopes of saving his struggling marriage to Debbie (Renée Zellweger), a woman whose dreams will lead all three of them on the most remarkable journey of their lives. Jon Voight plays Hall’s father, with whom he reconciles thanks to the revelations of his new life.

With much of the story taking place at a rescue mission, Pure Flix Entertainment and Paramount Pictures have provided the opportunity for helping and compassion organizations to host pre-release red carpet events. These events were created for such organizations to increase their donor and volunteer engagement.

“I believe this event will help the Turlock Gospel Mission raise awareness in our community of the work we do, and the red carpet premiere event will help us to raise the additional funding we need to purchase furniture and kitchen equipment for our new shelter,” said TGM Executive Director Christian Curby. “This movie has a tremendously impactful true story that will inspire all who watch it to never take our relationships for granted and to serve others.”

In June, the Turlock Gospel Mission was awarded a grant of $875,000 from the San Francisco based Federal Home Loan Bank and their Affordable Housing Program, which provided the needed funds to complete the construction on the year-round shelter.

Once completed, the year-round shelter will have beds for 35 men and 20 to 25 women and children at the start of operations. The facility will have an industrial kitchen that will be used to prepare meals, teach job skills and generate income through rentals. There also will be a dining area, a computer lab/conference area, showers, medical resources, storage areas, and laundry facilities.

The facility will work in conjunction with the organization’s day center to offer career training and connecting individuals with the social, mental health and medical services needed to help them leave homelessness behind.

The Turlock Gospel Mission began serving meals in 2008 and has offered an evening meal ministry, and shelter for women and children during the cold months. The organization opened the Homeless Assistance Ministry in 2012. The H.A.M. Center is now located across from the shelter at 432 S. Broadway and offers homeless individuals a safe place to go during the day. Through the two facilities TGM will be able to bring mental illness support, substance abuse treatment coordination, medical assistance, life and career skills resources and legal aid to homeless individuals in town.

The tickets for the red carpet event are $50 each and tickets can be purchased via TGM's website, www.turlockgospelmission.org. There are sponsorship opportunities available for businesses or individuals.
