Suspect in Turlock shooting, auto theft arrested

Johnthan Russell

POSTED October 13, 2017 10:10 p.m.

A Turlock man has been taken into custody on allegations he was responsible for a recent shooting and auto theft, according to the Turlock Police Department.

The shooting happened shortly before 11 p.m. Sept. 26 in the 500 block of S. Rose Street.

The victim was sitting in his vehicle when he was approached by an unknown man, who asked him for some money, said Turlock Police spokesperson Sgt. Russ Holeman.

The victim and the suspect “exchanged words with one another” before the suspect pulled out a handgun and fired one shot at the man, Holeman said.

The victim was pulling away in his vehicle and was not struck.

Through the course of the investigation, Johnthan Russell, 22, was identified as a suspect, and police began searching for him.

The following day the police department received a report of an auto theft, in which the suspect flashed a gun at a witness before fleeing the area. The description of the thief matched that of Russell, according to the police report.

The police department’s Community, Outreach, Response and Engagement team had been searching for Russell and on Sunday they found him in the 500 block of Bothun Road.

The C.O.R.E. officers could see a firearm in his possession and made the arrest at that moment.

Russell was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, auto theft, and possession of a stolen firearm.
