Turlock wrestler makes history, again

Alexia Moreno

POSTED March 30, 2010 11:28 p.m.
Remember Alexia Moreno?
She’s the Turlock High sophomore wrestler who crashed the record books like fine China last season. Well, she did it again.
After a historic high school wrestling season in which she became the first Bulldog to win a state tournament title before becoming a Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament finalist, her off-season is equally impressive. She competed in the Folkstyle Nationals in Oklahoma City last weekend and placed fourth in the 123-pound weight class, good enough to garner All-American status. She’s the first girl in Turlock history to achieve such a label.
Moreno also competed in the dual tournament for Team California and went 3-0, helping the team to a first-place showing.
“Alexia is only a sophomore,” Turlock coach Mike Contreras said, “so I am sure she has many more great accomplishments left in her future.”
After the summer, Moreno will work on becoming the first female athlete to compete for the Turlock wrestling program. Last season, she was a junior varsity wrestler.

Bulldog bragging rights
The Turlock High boys golf team continued its stride towards a seventh consecutive Central California Conference title, earning a 209-218 win against the Pitman Pride on Tuesday.
Turlock is now 5-1 for the season tying them with Merced’s Golden Valley High for first place in the CCC.
Jeff Chapman and Travis Souza both shot 39, with Eric Wetzel and Tyler Gomes shooting 43 each. Turlock, despite having missed key players due to winter sports engagements, found players to contribute to a thus-far successful season.
Pitman’s Troy Bennet was the leader for the Pride, notching a 39, along with Trevor Wells who shot a 40. Pitman is now 2-4 at the midway through the season.
“We have a chance again this season for something great,” said Turlock coach Ben Culula. “Regardless of what our record shows, I still believe our guys are capable of a lot more. They’re putting good numbers up, but they could be lower.”
Turlock will look to continue their success against Buhach High on Thursday.
