The Delhi High varsity boys cross country team captured back-to-back Southern Athletic League titles after Thursday’s final competition of the season concluded from Tuolumne Regional Park.

The win is even more impressive as the team was made up almost entirely of students recruited from physical education classes and coached by the Delhi athletic director.

“We had a whole new cast and won the championship; crazy how it was,” said Delhi head coach and Athletic Director Brian de la Porte.

It was a winner take all scenario heading into the SAL finals after Waterford held the overall team points advantage over Delhi after the first two league meets. Once the meet concluded, and the accumulation of three events was added, Delhi came out on top of the SAL by a score of 18-17.

Once accounting for the top five runners of each school, it came down to a tie (31-31) however, Delhi won the tiebreaker as their No. 6 runner finished ahead of Waterford's No. 6 runner.

Ruben Estrada of Delhi had the top placing with a third-place finish with a time of 19:05. Isaac Garcia of Delhi took fifth and Delhi's Fernando Tafoya followed in sixth.

“That is how close it was, which is insane and I am just so proud of these kids,” de la Porte added.
