POSTED November 7, 2017 5:08 p.m.

Modesto Police Department officers shot and wounded a suspect Monday morning who had threatened a Turlock Police officer with a firearm during a vehicle pursuit.

The suspect, Jason Boyd Perkins, 38, was wanted for a July 13 incident with the Turlock Police Department. Officers were in pursuit of Perkins, who was driving a stolen 1998 Honda Civic.

“During the pursuit Perkins exhibited and pointed a black in color pistol at the pursuing officers,” said Turlock Police spokesperson Sgt. Russ Holeman.

Perkins was able to avoid capture, but an arrest warrant was issued for him on allegations of assault on a police officer with a firearm, evading and auto theft.

On Monday, shortly before 9 a.m., bail bond agents spotted Perkins in a shopping center in the 1700 block of Oakdale Road in Modesto. Less than an hour later, the agents updated dispatch with Perkins’ location and requested law enforcement respond due to the suspect being dangerous and possibly armed, said Modesto Police spokesperson Heather Graves.

Officers patrolling the area responded and found Perkins seated in a vehicle parked in front of Bank of America. During the initial contact, an officer-involved shooting occurred. The circumstances leading up to the shooting are under investigation.

Emergency medical personnel transported Perkins to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

The officer involved in this incident was placed on paid administrative leave, which is a standard procedure with all officer-involved shootings.

Three separate and independent investigations have been launched. The Modesto Police Department is conducting both a criminal and administrative investigation and the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent review of the incident.

Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to call Detective Robert Gumm 209 -342-9162.
