Leaves belong in the green garbage can, not the storm drain

Leaves belong in the green garbage can, not the storm drain

Be sure to rake or blow the leaves and debris into a pile and dispose of them properly.

POSTED December 15, 2017 8:42 p.m.

As leaves begin to fall from the trees and cover the yard, the City of Turlock wants to remind residents, businesses, churches, and landscape companies the importance of their proper disposal.  Leaves and debris deposited into the gutter begin to collect in and around the storm drain, restricting the flow of water and causing street flooding and storm water pollution when it rains.

While leaf blowers make the job much easier and quicker, be sure to blow the leaves and debris into a pile and dispose of them properly.  Composting, bagging, or mulching yard debris is the best practice for water quality and the environment. Bagged yard waste should be placed in the green organics cart provided by Turlock Scavenger.

As a reminder, Turlock’s Public Facilities Maintenance Division’s annual Leaf Pickup Program began Nov. 6 and ends on Feb. 8. Please visit the City’s website to determine your neighborhoods designated leaf pickup days (http://ci.turlock.ca.us/streetstraffic/leafpickupprogram/).  Leaves should only be placed in the street the day before your scheduled pick-up, and only after the green organics cart is full.

For questions or additional information, please contact Municipal Services at 209-668-5590.

The Winter Watering Schedule is now in effect: Outdoor watering is limited to one day per week through Feb. 28. During the winter schedule, even numbered homes can water on Saturdays only and odd numbered homes can water on Sundays. Watering will be prohibited between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. always. And remember, watering is prohibited for 48 hours following a significant rain event.
