The Central Valley movement, March for California’s Future, which began a walk of protest in Bakersfield and plans to end in Sacramento, rolled into Turlock on Monday.
The group, led by the California Federation of Teachers and a coalition of other unions and community members, held a rally at Donnelly Park on Monday, then began their march again on Tuesday headed north. The group’s stated mission is to “reclaim the promise of quality public education and services, rebuild state government so it works for everyone and restore fair and equitable taxes to invest in California’s future.”
“In the last two years, all of the cuts in education have cost thousands of workers to lose their jobs and a lot more have lost more than just their jobs,” said Sonny Da Marto, Turlock Unified School District superintendent at Monday’s rally. “This is not the way things should be done in this country.”
The marchers started walking from Bakersfield on March 5 and plan to end their march April 21 at the Capitol, said Jim Miller, coordinator for the March for California’s Future.
Once the marchers arrive at the Capital, they plan to protest and march all day on April 21 and then lobby legislators on April 22 to fight for changes in California government, Miller said.
Along the way, the organization has gathered supporters from all over the Central Valley, he said, including over 2,000 people in Los Angeles.
One of the things March for California’s Future is hoping to get is support for the majority budget ballot measure. The measure would require a simple majority vote to pass the state budget, rather than the two-thirds supermajority vote that is presently required.
“If we work together and fight together, we will win together,” said Doug Mar, speaker at the Turlock rally. “If we build one strong coalition, no one or no body including Arnold can stop us.”
