Fleeing driver tries to hit police officer

POSTED January 19, 2018 8:43 p.m.

A man trying to evade arrest led Turlock Police officers on a high-speed pursuit that saw him crash his vehicle into several parked cars and then try to hit a police officer.

The pursuit was eventually called off for safety reasons and the suspect remains wanted.

The incident began around 6 p.m. Thursday in the area of N. Berkeley Avenue and N. Canal Drive.

The police department was responding to the scene of a collision between a red pickup truck and a silver vehicle. As officers were arriving they spotted a man jump into the red truck and speed away.

Officers pursued the truck, which struck two parked cars, but continued driving away.

“While fleeing the scene of the collision in his vehicle, he drove his pickup in the direction of an officer’s patrol vehicle while being driven by the officer,” said Turlock Police spokesman Sgt. Russ Holeman. “The officer was able to avoid being struck.”

The pursuit continued for about two more minutes, before officers terminated it in the area of Linwood Avenue and Paulson Road because of the driver’s erratic behavior.

The suspect has been identified, but his name is not being released at this time. He is wanted for two felony warrants and new charges of felony evading, aggravated assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest and hit and run.
