Turlock girls basketball bests GV to remain first in CCC

POSTED February 2, 2018 4:54 p.m.

There are only three games left in the regular season. With that, the Turlock High varsity girls basketball team is still perfect in league play with a 9-0 record after defeating Golden Valley at home on Thursday, 48-26.

The Bulldogs managed to pull through with another win, even though two of Turlock’s top players, Sarah Musselman and Jaydon Williams, went down with apparent knee injuries during Tuesday’s game against Atwater.

“We are so lucky to have a full-time athletic trainer at Turlock High. We had two players go down with knee injuries at Atwater,” said Turlock head coach Mark Musselman.  “Mike Collins rushed down to the school to evaluate and treat them at 9:30 p.m. and just thinking that not only will it make a good story, and also help the district understand how much these people mean to the safety and welfare of our children.”

Down two starters, including last year’s co-Journal Player of the Year (Williams), Turlock was heading into the Golden Valley game not knowing what to expect.

They went head on with who they had on the roster and went up early on GV after the first ended, 16-5.

They then outscored GV in the second 13-9 and 19-12 in the second half combined, ousting their ninth straight league foe.

Jada Washington scored 11 points for a team-high, while Isabella Bush had 10. Hope Salsig added nine. Mackenzie Ussery had six, while nine players total scored for Turlock.

Turlock’s overall record improves to 19-4 and 9-0 in the CCC.

Turlock will next take on second place Merced on the road at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.
