Narcotics search turns up marijuana, guns and a mortar round in Turlock home

A total of seven firearms were found during a search of a Turlock home related to a narcotics investigation.

POSTED March 6, 2018 5:55 p.m.

A search of a home by Turlock Police investigators turned up a mortar round that prompted an evacuation of the neighborhood and a call to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s bomb squad Tuesday morning.

The mortar was eventually determined to be inert and residents were allowed back into their homes. Investigators also were able to resume their search, which resulted in the arrest of one man and the seizure of multiple guns and marijuana plants.

The incident began around 10 a.m. Tuesday when investigators went to serve a search warrant at a home in the 1000 block of Carrousel Court. The search warrant was in relation to a narcotics investigation, said Turlock Police spokesman Russ Holeman.

At the home investigators found more than 300 marijuana plants being grown, as well as seven firearms, including an illegal assault rifle. A search of a bedroom also yielded a 60-millimeter mortar round, which prompted a hiatus in the search and an evacuation of the neighborhood.

The neighborhood, which had five other homes in addition to the one being searched was evacuated and cordoned off, including Summerfaire Park across the street. The area was reopened about four hours after the initial discovery.

The Explosives Ordinance Team handled the disposal of the mortar.

Daniel Arce-Sandoval, 42, of Turlock was at the residence when the search warrant was served. He was arrested and booked into Stanislaus County Jail for cultivation and sales of marijuana, and possession of an illegal assault rifle. Investigators are working to determine if additional charges are warranted, Holeman said.
