History of business:

Salons are typically home to the hustle and bustle of plenty of busy bodies shampooing, chopping and curling away, unless that pampering is taking place at Sculpt Hair Studio – a quaint salon that’s somewhat easy-to-miss, but provides hard-to-forget service.

Nestled next to the pool patio at Brenda Athletic Clubs, most gym-goers most likely don’t even realize that the small building is a beauty salon as they pass by it on their way to work out. After all, it was once used by the gym for storage.

Sculpt owner Angie Melander had operated her salon out of numerous locations around town up until about two years ago, she said, when she decided she wanted a salon where only she would work. She found the location at BAC, where the gym was looking to put a massage therapist or nail technician, and fell in love.

Soon enough, new floors were put in, new plumbing was installed and Sculpt’s new home was born.

A salon with just one stylist provides a more serene experience for clients, said Melander, and she makes sure to only book one person at a time to ensure privacy.

“It’s really a private space, so people are able to talk about whatever they want to,” said Melander. “They’re able to unwind and not have to listen to the conversation next to them. Some people don’t want to hear other stories – when they’re being pampered, they want to think about themselves.”

Melander prides herself in her color correction skills, and goes above and beyond to make sure her clients leave feeling their best.

“I research everything,” she said, adding that she has even called different hair lines to talk with their chemists in order to know as much as she can about the products she uses. “I want to know the right thing to use for each person because hair color is not just black and white – there’s a palette for each person.”

In addition to color correction, Melander provides most all other salon services, including haircuts, styling, manicures, pedicures, waxing and facials. Clients are often treated to a beverage like flavored water, tea or coffee while their service is being performed, and Melander even decides what music to play based on the clients’ preferences.

“It’s just really about relaxing,” she said.
