History of business:

Seeing a style pattern in many local furniture stores, Atwater resident Alida Mendoza opened the doors to her own décor shop endeavor this week, bringing a marriage of traditional and contemporary design to Turlock.

Through a minimalist yet modern approach, A Home Décor offers furniture that Mendoza believes embodies a style that’s becoming increasingly popular here in the Central Valley.

“I used to live in the Bay Area, so that’s my style — more of a ‘city’ style,” Mendoza said. “I wanted to bring it here because I think it’s starting to catch on.”

Mendoza also owns a salon in the Bay Area, and her sister recently opened a boutique in the same shopping center as A Home Décor. Mendoza prides herself on providing affordable furniture as well as unique, designer pieces, all of which she gets from the East Coast.

“I have a mix of high-end to mid-end pieces because I want to provide affordable furniture, too,” she said.

A majority of the furniture offered on A Home Décor’s showroom floor can be described as transitional, which features pieces that blend rustic style with modern accents, and most pieces have either straight lines or rounded profiles that are simple, yet sophisticated. The transitional style’s palette relies on taupes, tans and vanillas with the occasional pop of color, like the pair of green couches that greet customers as they walk into the store, or the striking, orange shag rug that compliments a cream couch in the shop.

Mendoza hopes to add to the rustic style already popular in many Turlock homes through A Home Décor’s pieces. In fact, much of the furniture pays homage to popular rustic trends, she said, like her favorite piece in the store — a seemingly-contemporary, wooden table that features modern, metal legs.

“I would describe it as ‘trendy,’ and people are becoming more open to that right now,” Mendoza said. “We want to be different than what everyone else carries.”
