Pitman High swimmer Stephanie Young wasn't at her fastest at the Central California Conference Championships on Saturday at Pitman High. But that's fine with her.

It's supposed to be that way.

After grueling training sessions before tapering, the senior captured both of her individual events in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke and contributed in the Pride's 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay wins. It helped her team to a second-place showing after being in third midway through the meet that saw Merced High take the girls team title with 508 points, meaning the Pride (417 points) were dethroned after capturing the previous four league titles.

“Just a little disappointed,” Pitman coach Anne Cornell said. “We won four in a row and we were anticipating a fifth. But we knew it was going to be a challenge. We didn't have the depth.”

But they had the star power — in Young, who's headed to South Dakota State next season.

On Saturday, her breaststroke time was clocked at 1 minute, 7.68 seconds. Young hopes to take it down to 1:04.2 to give her a good shot at finishing in the top three at the Sac-Joaquin Section Meet that starts on May 13 at Tokay High; that time is also enough for All-American status.

Last season, Young finished sixth in the breaststroke at the Section meet.

Other Pitman girl winners at the CCC meet were Brittany Funk (100 butterfly) and Lexie McCaskill (100 backstroke).

On the boys side, the Merced Bears also took home the CCC title with 557 points, ahead of runner-up Atwater High and third-place Turlock. Pitman came in fifth.

Ian Roos provided the highlights for the Pride, as he captured the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle.

Also, Pitman's 200 freestyle relay team came in first.
