Stabbing reported in Planada

POSTED June 11, 2010 9:16 p.m.

A 20-year-old man is recovering from two stab wounds he received when he was attacked by a group of suspected gang members Wednesday night in Planada.

The victim had two stab wounds to his left leg, said Merced County Sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Tom MacKenzie. One wound was about three and half inches long and two inches deep and the other was two inches long and two inches deep.

The incident began around 7 p.m. as the victim was driving near a park in the area of Broadway and Sutter Street.

The victim told sheriff’s investigators that as he passed by the park, a group of gang members standing by a car started throwing “gang signs” at him, but because he was outnumbered, he continued driving on.

He said a short time later he was flagged down by a friend and pulled over to the curb. He told investigators that he heard his friend shout a warning and that he turned around to see three men approaching him.

The suspects began punching the victim through the open window on the driver’s side. The victim tried to get out of the car, but the suspects slammed the door shut and kept punching him, MacKenzie said.

The victim said he was able to turn his body and kicked at the suspects while attempting to put the key in the ignition. He was eventually able to start the car and drive off, MacKenzie said. The victim said he felt what he thought was a scratch to his leg and looked down and noticed he had been stabbed.

The victim drove to his home and had his mother take him to an emergency room. He was treated for his wounds and released from the hospital.

The only description the victim could give was that one suspect was about 20 years old, with a shaved head and was wearing a blue shirt.

Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to contact the sheriff’s department at 385-7472. Callers can remain anonymous.
