A 49-year-old Winton woman has been charged with a home invasion robbery and elder abuse of an 86-year-old man, the Merced County Sheriff’s Department reported Wednesday. The victim told the sheriff’s department that Denise Mayfield had come into his house in the 7000 block of Walnut Avenue in Winton on July 15 and pushed him to the ground and took his wallet out of his pants. The victim, who has very poor eyesight said he recognized her by the sound of her voice, said sheriff spokesman Deputy Tom MacKenzie.Earlier that month, Mayfield had come to the victim saying she needed a ride to court because she was supposed to turn herself in. The victim has a car, but does not drive due to his poor eyesight, so Mayfield drove them both there in his car, MacKenzie said.Once at the courthouse, Mayfield said she forgot something in the car and went back to the parking lot and then got into the car and drove away, leaving the victim stranded in Merced. The incident was reported to the Merced Police Department. The victim’s vehicle was recovered a few days later by the Merced County Sheriff’s Department. On Tuesday Detective Jason Jacklitsch responded to Mayfield’s residence in the 6100 block of Santa Fe Road in Winton and placed her under arrest for home invasion and elder abuse. She remains in jail on a $100,000 bail.
