Arrests made in Modesto homicide

Four people have been arrested in connection to a fatal shooting that occurred in Modesto in June. One additional suspect remains at large, the Modesto Police Department reported.Juan Gabriel Barajas, 32, of Modesto was killed on June 27. He was found slumped over the wheel of a car in the 1600 block of Vicksburg Avenue and had been shot at least once, according to the police department.Detectives developed several leads and on July 12 they arrested Gilberto Navarroa, Jr., 23, of Modesto and charged him with murder.Still outstanding on a warrant for murder is Francisco “Frankie” Carranza Meza, 23, of Modesto. Detectives believe Meza has fled to Mexico and are seeking the public’s help in locating him. He is considered armed and dangerous.On July 15 and 16, detectives took Maricela Varela, 23, Sarah Irene Taberna, 26, and Gloria “Kina” Meza, 29, all of Modesto into custody. All three women were charged with accessory to murder. According to the police department, the women helped the two men by providing false information to investigators and assisted the suspects with the destruction of evidence at the crime scene.The murder stemmed from a domestic dispute, according to the police department.Police ask anyone who may have information regarding this incident to call Detective Jon Evers at 652-1995 or Crime Stoppers at 521-4636.
