Murder charge for daughter of victim

A former San Jose reserve police officer has been charged with murder in the death of her mother in Los Banos.Denise Lai, 47, is accused of strangling her mother to death on Aug. 2. The body of Carolyn Ninomiya, 65, was found inside her home in a gated retirement community in Los Banos on Aug. 3.Lai was found the same day in a Los Banos parking lot with self-inflicted stab wounds.According to the Los Banos Police Department, Lai admitted to killing her mother before trying to kill herself.Lai was a volunteer reserve officer for 15 years before resigning in 2008.She was arraigned on Friday at the Merced County Superior Court on charges of murder and endangering an elderly person.
