Shorter run for Merced County Fair in 2011

POSTED August 20, 2010 9:33 p.m.

In an effort to save money while keeping admission costs reasonable, the Merced County Fair will shorten their run dates to five days for 2011.

“The board carefully considered this decision,” said Tom Musser, Merced County Fair chief executive officer. “The 2011 Fair was a big success, but for us to continue to put on a top quality fair without raising prices we need to make this move.”

The Board of Directors decided to shorten the fair run for 2011 to avoid having to increase admission costs and other prices associated with the fair, he said. The fair will run from June 15, 2011 through  June 19, 2011.

“By making the fair one day shorter we can invest some of that savings in our entertainment offerings and put on an even better fair,” Musser said. “We want to be an excellent five-day fair, jam-packed with fun.”

The fair is expecting to see significant savings in operational expenses by decreasing the run dates, he said. The board took a look at all the impacts of the five-day run change including carnival, vendors, exhibits, the community and the livestock showing and judging schedules. The livestock show schedule won’t change and judging will begin on June 14, 2011 before the fair starts.

Merced County has had a fair since 1891 making this the 120th fair. The six-day fair run dates go back about 50 years in Merced County.

“While the fair’s traditions are very important, changes to meet the needs and desires of the community today are equally important,” Musser said. “We’ve had many people in the community come to us suggesting we make this change. The state of the economy demands that we do business differently to present a first class fair that everyone can enjoy.”
