Denair football: 2010 preview

POSTED August 24, 2010 9:46 p.m.

2009 record: 3-2 Southern League, 5-6 overall

Head coach: Therion Gregory (8th year)

Assistants: Joel Sanders, Scott Gregory, Erik Vangaalen, Robert Moore, Andrew Kessler, Bob Moore, Don Helnore, Joe Prock, Scott Taylor

Top returners: Dylan Souza, Jacob Wagner, Martin Sanchez, Trevor Werner, Colin Sosa, Eric Thorton, Paul Oei

Top Newcomers: Jim Atkinson, Zack Bailey, Brad Tobin, Bryce Melrose

Outlook: The biggest blow the Coyotes suffered happened only a few days before school started, when they learned that two-time varsity starting quarterback Codee Watts and his family moved to Southern California. It was unexpected, but the Denair coaching staff and players had to adjust quickly. Enter junior Jim Atkinson, who instantly became the QB of a program that looks to make the playoffs again. The Coyotes have a good chance, with running back Dylan Souza returning. He rushed for nearly 1,300 yards in 2009. Coach Therion Gregory said this year’s group of 22 players is a good mix of veterans and upcoming talent. And he expects them to be just fine despite the fact that they lost their QB just days before school began. “I think the guys responded well to it,” Gregory said. “They hate to see Codee go, but there’s nothing we can do about it.”
