Turlock High grad nominated for Emmy

POSTED August 24, 2010 10:07 p.m.
Bayard Stryker, a 1996 Turlock High graduate, was nominated for a 2010 Emmy Award for “Outstanding Short-Form Picture Editing.”

Stryker’s nomination was entered by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in recognition of a three-minute montage — a “Horror Tribute” — he prepared for the 82nd Academy Awards. The montage, which begins with the ominous, pulsating cellos of “Jaws,” is an overview of nearly a century of horror films and consists of shots from more than 50 films.
Stryker and fellow editor Jon Bloom were among six nominated for the honor; the other nominees included editors of the “John Hughes Tribute,” also for the Oscars, an episode from “American Idol,” two episodes from “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and one for an episode from “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” The Emmy was awarded to the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” show.

Stryker, 32, the son of CSU Stanislaus professors Steve and Christine Stryker, first honed his editing skills in the studios of CSU Stanislaus as a teenager helping his dad prepare videos for his classes and later working at Turlock High on various videos to promote local events.

Stryker majored in film at UC Santa Cruz and was one of the youngest students to be admitted to the Editing Program at the American Film Institute in Hollywood. Since graduation with his Masters in Film Editing in 2002, he has worked freelance in Los Angeles on a broad variety of projects including feature films, movie trailers, and TV. He worked with a team of editors on the “Tribute to Peter O’ Toole” for the 75th Annual Academy Awards and again on “75 Years of Academy Shorts” for the 2008 Oscars.  He is currently working on a similar montage for the 2010 Emmy show, which will be broadcast on Sunday.
