As the opening day of the Stanislaus County Fair draws close, so does the annual Apple Pie Contest. Each year local bakers put their talents to the test hoping that their pie earns top honors, while also giving back to the community. Each pie contest entrant is required to bake two pies — one for the judges and one to be given to the United Samaritan Foundation’s Daily Bread trucks which serve a free lunch to those in need.
Five local dignitaries will judge the pies on the opening day of the Fair, July 31. The 2009 apple pie contest judges will be: Steve Palios, USF Board member; Ramon Bawanan, Mayor of Hughson; Alex Loya, Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office victim’s advocate; Mary Jackson, Turlock City Council member; and Julie Fox of the California State University, Stanislaus office of Service Learning.
First prize is $100 and second prize is $50.
The contest is free to enter, but bakers must register in advance at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds office located at 900 N. Broadway. For more information call the Fair office at 668-1333.
