Turlock city council candidate profile: Timm LaVelle

Turlock city council candidate profile: Timm LaVelle

POSTED October 13, 2010 5:01 p.m.

Name: Timm LaVelle

Age: 51

Occupation: Business Owner

Background:  Education — Masters Public Administration, CSU Stansilaus; B.A. International Relations, CSU Chico. Family — Married, two children, resident of Turlock for 24 years.

Q. Why do you think you would make a good council member?

A. I feel the qualities that will make me a good council member once elected are my education, training and experience.  During the past eight years I have served as a trustee for the Turlock School District where we dealt with a budget of $180 million, 1,400 employees and the management of the district administration.  I was trained in “team governance” which is a method of working together as a unified governing board. In our decision-making I will bring all involved and affected parties to the table which will include the community.

While serving the school district I dealt with the needs of various neighborhoods in our city.  Schools are located in many parts of town with each having its own unique challenges.  I will focus the council’s attention and resources on better serving the specific needs of each neighborhood.  I am also a small business owner and I understand the necessity for streamlining the permitting process to help encourage the growth and operation of new and expanding businesses in Turlock which will bring jobs and tax revenue to the city.

Q. If elected, what would be your priorities in office?

A. My top priorities are to bring a new level of professional and consistent leadership to the council, to balance the budget without devastating city services, to review all codes and regulations that hinder small business development and to streamline the application and permitting process.  Another high priority is to have a greater focus on the needs of our youth by providing them creative outlets so that they can foster a personal pride in their community.

Bringing new industry and job creation along with orderly, controlled, smart growth and maintaining our levels of public safety are paramount in keeping Turlock the jewel of the Valley.  These will be my goals when elected.
