Turlock city council candidate profile: David Fransen

POSTED October 13, 2010 5:06 p.m.

Name: David Fransen

Age: 34

Occupation: Business Owner

Background: My family roots run deep in Turlock. My grandparents, John and Katherine Martinez (Martinez Plywood), were active in Turlock’s development and Everett and Carmen (Soderquist) Fransen settled in Turlock in the 1900s. This “early Turlock” background and my participation in “modern Turlock” provide me with a unique perspective that helps define my long-term vision for our town.

I have a long track record of successful involvement in the community including building a modern information technology business, TurlockCityNews.com. I also successfully lead efforts to bring new community amenities to Turlock including our first ever bike and skate parks for local youth.

Q. Why do you think you would make a good council member?

A. My proven track record shows that I love Turlock and have been a contributing Turlock community leader over the decades.

My Turlock involvement:

Turlock business owner since 1996, Turlock Better Roads-Safer Streets Committee, TurlockCityNews.com media and marketing, Turlock Downtown Promotion Committee, Turlock Citywide Online Business Proposal, Turlock Community Event Planning, Turlock Historical Society Board, Turlock Bike Park - Committee Leader, Turlock Centennial Committee, Turlock Skate Park - Committee Leader, Turlock Documentary Committee, Turlock Recreation - Concert Organizer, Turlock Melon Carnival Committee, Turlock City Radio Show Host at CSU Stanislaus, and more.

My public participation on the record with local government:

Turlock Budget Committee, Turlock Carnegie Arts Center, Turlock Dog Park Forums, Turlock Growth Plan Workshops, Turlock City Council, Turlock Planning Commission, Turlock Parks & Rec. Commission, Turlock Homeless Shelter Workshops, Turlock Downtown Branding, and more.

Q. If elected, what would be your priorities in office?

A. My goals will be to always balance a high quality of life with a fiscally efficient perspective by:

* Encouraging economic development and addressing downtown’s contribution. Creating jobs, retaining local tax dollars, increasing City revenues, support business.

* Developing sound, conservative fiscal priorities. Making tough budget decisions based on needs first, then wants.

* Prioritizing public safety #1 while proactively supporting our youth. Advocating strategic plans that deliver efficient public safety services while working toward a City youth center.

* Emphasizing intelligently planned, sustainable growth. Figure out how to pay for what we have now, making sure new growth pays for itself while growing up and not out.

* Supporting transparency and civility while working with and for the public. The people of Turlock will have an accessible Turlock City Council member if they elect me.
