Stanislaus women’s soccer can’t hold off nationally ranked team

POSTED October 19, 2010 11:25 p.m.

The Cal State Stanislaus women's soccer team suffered its second road loss last weekend, this time a 3-0 defeat at No. 22 UC San Diego in La Jolla on Sunday.
The Warriors, now 9-4-1 overall and 7-4-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, remain in second place in the CCAA North. San Francisco State, with a win over CSU Monterey Bay, now leads the Warriors by four points in the division.
UC San Diego leads the South Division over Cal State Dominguez Hills by a point. The Tritons improved to 10-2-2 overall and 8-2-2 in conference play.
"I was pleased with the way we battled today, especially in the first half," Warriors coach Gabriel Bolton said. "The difference in the game was San Diego put away their chances and we didn't."
Three different Tritons scored for UC San Diego on Sunday despite the Warriors holding a rapid-shooting offense down to 10 shots in the match with five on goal.
Sarah McTigue scored her fifth of the season for UCSD in the 18th minute to give the home team a 1-0 lead. She beat a Warrior defender around the corner and knocked it past Stanislaus goalkeeper Millie Brown.
With the score at 1-0 at the break, UCSD came out of the gate in the second half with two quick scores. Aneette Ilg scored in the 51st minute and Shelby Wong, who assisted on the Ilg goal, added a third goal about four minutes later.
UC San Diego outshot the Warriors 10-5 with Stanislaus freshman Karenee Demery firing off the only shot of goal for the Warriors.
Cal State Stanislaus went 1-2-1 in the four-game road stretch. The Warriors return home to host Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at Warrior Stadium, respectively.
"We are looking forward to playing at home next weekend in front of our great fans," Bolton added.

 Stanislaus men held scoreless

Once again the Warriors men outshot their opponents, but UC San Diego scored on two of its chances as the visiting Cal State Stanislaus men's side dropped to the Tritons, 2-0, Sunday in La Jolla.
UC San Diego scored two first-half goals and held off an attacking Stanislaus team in the second half for the win to improve to 6-4-4 overall and 6-3-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Cal State Stanislaus dropped to 7-4-3 overall and 6-4-2 in the CCAA. With four regular season matches remaining, the Warriors fall four points behind divisional leader Chico State. The Wildcats beat Cal State East Bay on Sunday.
In Sunday's match, UC San Diego found the back of the net early in the 12th minute with a goal by Shane Mitchell. He was assisted by David Bakal.

Adam Zernik gave UCSD a 2-0 lead 22 minutes later on a 25-yard strike.
