Mix in equal parts of fun-loving music, heart-string pulling ballads and throw in a few songs about beer, and you get one of Nashville’s newest bands and upcoming Stanislaus County Fair performers, Trailer Choir.
The trio that makes up Trailer Choir is singer/emcee Butter, the pop-worming Big Vinny, and the big-voiced Crystal. Together they have launched a band that is generating a lot of buzz and was recently named the Best New Country Duo/Group by About.com.
After building up a loyal fan base in Nashville, Trailer Choir hit the road with country superstar Toby Keith and released their debut CD “Off the Hillbilly Hook.”
“It’s been a very exciting year for us,” said Butter. “But we’re not done yet. We’re going to keep pushing and pursuing that dream.”
Trailer Choir formed a few years back when Butter, a self-described class clown, met fellow jokester and songwriter Big Vinny and the two started working the Nashville music circuit together.
“As Big Vinny and I got deeper into Trailer Choir and saw our fan base grow, we started to allow the thought that this might be bigger than the sum of its parts,” Butter said.
The final touches were put on the group when Crystal, already a fan, decided to spontaneously join them on stage one night.
“I was getting frustrated because one of their songs really needed a female harmony, so I just took over a microphone,” she said.
The group’s big break came when Keith went to one of their shows and made his way back stage afterwards to meet the trio. Five weeks later they were on a tour bus as part of “Toby’s Big Dog Daddy” tour.
“Toby said get your stuff, get the band, just get out there and introduce yourselves and play,” Butter said.
“And then it was off to the races,” Big Vinny said of the band’s success since that meeting.
Trailer Choir will be opening for Mark Chesnutt at 8:30 p.m. Saturday on the Budweiser Variety Free Stage at the fairgrounds. They will be joining a bevy of performers that should delight musical fans of all tastes.
Fans of rock music will enjoy a line-up that includes Grand Funk Railroad, Rick Springfield and Huey Lewis and the News.
Country music fans will get more of their favorite genre with Gretchen Wilson and Josh Turner.
Younger fans should delight in the musical stylings of the Naked Brothers Band and the Newsboys, while more seasoned fans will likely appreciate the Four Tops Show.
All concerts at the Stanislaus County Fair are free with fair admission. A complete listing of the Fair’s entertainment line-up, along with dates and times, is available inside the Journal’s Fair preview tab inserted in today’s issue.
