Developmentally disabled man’s body found at Fox Grove

POSTED July 28, 2009 8:29 p.m.
The body of a developmentally disabled man reported missing by his family on Monday was found Tuesday morning at a popular Hughson fishing hole.
Brian Peeper, 41, of Modesto had been missing for more than 14 hours when his body was discovered by Stanislaus County Sheriff deputies. He was found near a boat ramp at the Fox Grove fishing access on the Tuolumne River, according to Sheriff’s Capt. Tim Beck.
Peeper’s body had been concealed by vegetation growing along the river’s edge. He still had on the floatation device his family had seen him wearing before he disappeared.
Peeper was reported missing by his family around 6:30 p.m. Monday after they had searched the Fox Grove area for two hours in vain. The family told the sheriff’s department that Peeper was developmentally disabled and had the capacity of an 8-year-old, Beck said.
Air Med and the sheriff’s helicopter searched the area, but were unable to locate Peeper. The Hughson Fire Department assisted with personnel who searched the area on foot, as did sheriff’s personnel and K-9 teams from the sheriff’s department and the Modesto Police Department.
During the search, some of Peeper’s personal belongings were found, but searchers were unable to find him before darkness fell upon the area, Beck said. The search was called off for the night due to darkness impeding the search efforts.
The search resumed the next morning and deputies used boats to search the banks of the Tuolumne River near the fishing access. His body was recovered around 9 a.m. Beck said the immediate family was notified of the recovery and an autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday.
