Wrong way driver dies, injures two

POSTED November 9, 2010 11:17 p.m.

A Ceres woman was killed Tuesday morning when she drove head-on into another car while driving in the wrong direction along a stretch of highway in Turlock.

The woman was identified as 55-year-old Harmanpreet Kaur.

The collision also critically injured the driver of the other vehicle and left his passenger with minor injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision was reported just past 1 a.m. Tuesday on southbound 99, just north of Monte Vista Avenue.

The CHP said Kaur was driving a 2001 Honda between 70 to 80 mph, headed north in a southbound lane.

Driving in the same lane, but headed south, was a 1998 Chevrolet pickup driven by 36-year-old Jeffrey Wilson of Bakersfield. Wilson was accompanied by Ramond Aguirre, 58, of Bakersfield. Wilson was driving about 65 mph, according to the CHP.

The two vehicles collided head-on with one another. The impact sent the Honda into the center median and forced the pickup off the right shoulder and into a ditch.

Kaur was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wilson sustained major injuries and was transported to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. Aguirre had minor injuries and was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.

All the parties were wearing their seat belts.

The collision remains under investigation and it has not been determined yet if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision, the CHP said.

It is not known for how long Kaur was traveling in the wrong direction before the crash.

The southbound lanes were closed for about two hours for the investigation and for clean-up.
