Area schools tune up for Orchestra Day

POSTED November 16, 2010 11:28 p.m.

Pitman and Turlock high schools’ orchestras will be joining four other Stanislaus County schools for Modesto Junior College’s annual High School Orchestra Day.

The show is set from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday in the Main Auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center on the east campus.

The event features performances by each orchestra and is free and open to the public. MJC Community Orchestra conductor and strings professor, Anne Martin, will lead a clinic with the high school musicians. Each high school will perform a 20-minute selection of orchestra repertoire. Participating high schools include, Downey, directed by Joanne Neuffer; Davis, directed by Paul Montoya; Turlock, led by Donna Harrison; Pitman, led by Don Grishaw; Enochs, directed by Dave Boyatt, and Modesto, directed by Troy Rexelle.  The gypsy “Dance Melody” from Romania will also be performed by an ensemble of the music teachers, including Neuffer on flute; Grishaw, Harrison and Martin on violin; Montoya on guitar; Boyatt on trombone; and Peter Hodson on cello.  The event will conclude with a performance of the well known Irish tune, “Kesh Jig,” by over 200 high school string musicians and their teachers.
