Drowning claims life of 14-year-old

POSTED July 31, 2009 11:12 p.m.
A 14-year-old boy drowned in a backyard pool after he went missing from a family party in Dos Palos, according to the Merced County Sheriff’s Department.
The identity of the 14-year-old has not been released.
The boy went missing from his 9-year-old stepbrother’s birthday party Thursday afternoon at a residence in the 8000 block of Eucalyptus Avenue in Dos Palos.
As the family searched for the boy, his younger sister got into the swimming pool at the house, which contained murky water, and found her brother at the bottom of the pool, said sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Tom MacKenzie.
The family immediately started CPR and called for medical assistance. The boy was rushed by ambulance to Los Banos Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, MacKenzie said.
The circumstances surrounding how the boy drowned are still under investigation and interviews with the family were being conducted, MacKenzie said.
The pool was an above ground model about 3 feet deep by 12 feet wide.
